A guide to buying diamonds
The four C’s determine a diamonds all round beauty. This is made up of carat, colour, clarity and cut.
Carat is how much the diamond weighs. 1 Carat is equivalent to 0.20 grams and is divided into 100 points, therefore, a diamond weighing half a carat will also be described as 0.50cts in weight.
Diamond colour is based on a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) scale which ranges from a D colour, this is colourless, to Z, this is a slight yellow hue. The least amount of colour there is present in a diamond, the rarer and more expensive that diamond will be.
According to the GIA, the Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Each diamond is individual and unique in its own way and inclusions are thought of as a diamond’s birthmark.
A cut of a diamond is the proportion of a diamond. How a diamond is cut, determines the sparkle and fire that it produces.
