This is a question I received not too long ago, so I did some research. I obviously always knew what I believed, but I also wanted to see what other media sources told people. I’ve read things like, “3 months salary should be spent on a engagement ring”, “4% of your annual income is the recommended price for a diamond ring” or even; “the average amount to spend on an engagement ring in the UK is £5000, so this is how much you should spend this too.”
Firstly, how much you spend on your partners engagement ring is no one’s business.
Secondly, there is absolutely no “rule” on how much you should spend on an engagement ring. The only the thing to go by, is to choose something that, you believe, they will love. Im not trying to diminish how important this purchase is, of course its a big – huge, you’re probably never going to spend more on a ring in your lifetime, but you shouldn’t worry about where it’s going to leave you financially and it’s definitely not worth going in to debt for.
When all is said and done, if they’re the right person for you, if thought and consideration have gone into the buying process, they are going to love it, no matter what.
